An unbuilt proposal for Hauser and Wirth’s Maltings site in Bruton, Library of Things is a place for intimate thinking. Existing at the site are extensive workshops, studio spaces and accommodation for resident artists. Parallel to activities of physical making that are already accommodated for, the purpose of the library is a contemplative space to research, study and put thoughts into order.
A living archive, we envisioned that this space would be used consecutively by the resident artists with each leaving some physical trace of their creative process behind. Left-behind maquettes, sketches, collected objects, photographs, books, notes and doodles made by the artist during their stay, form a curated display inside the shed. Over the years the contents of the shed would naturally evolve, becoming a museum of sorts - a library of things, charting the history of residencies at the Maltings.

The proposed construction method employed heavy earth bag walls, with a more delicate timber roof sitting atop from which shelves were suspended. This construction method could be achieved through a self-build programme, suggested to meet the small construction budget, and to provide educational workshops that could engage with the members of the local community.
