The Grade II Listed house was built in 1849 has been in continuous occupation by its owner, a writer and painter, since 1970. The project involves the restoration of some historic features of the property as well as a series of careful alterations and additions to allow the building to adapt.
New spaces include a roof extension painting studio and a rear outrigger extension with a library and reading room to provide space for the owner’s extensive book collection.
The project aims to embody the highest level of sustainable design within a historic building. This includes a high thermal performance paired with a preference for whole materials worked on site avoiding complex products and assemblies which cannot be adapted and become landfill at the end of use.
The choice of materials, including timber, wood wool, lime, chalk paints and clay plaster, have ultra low-embodied carbon. They not only work sympathetically with the historic fabric of the house but also create a healthy internal environment.
